Express Retreat For A Busy Mum

As a breastfeeding mum, I knew my “retreat” would have to be in miniature this year. So I took my bible, journal and pencil and headed to St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Camberwell to spend a few hours alone with God. As I approached the building, I could have gone in via the side steps, but I loved the idea of entering through those enormous glass doors in the main entrance.

As I walked in and down the aisle, the image of Christ hanging on the cross and the sun streaming through the stained glass windows immediately helped me focus on Jesus my Saviour. Candles were flickering in one corner, a large wooden table up the front was draped in a hand-sewn linen tablecloth and looking up, I saw beams on the ceiling, with what appeared to be old water marks.

The church is open daily for public prayer and meditation, so other folk came and went, lighting candles, praying, kneeling and bowing, all of which I found very touching. In fact, I felt rather invisible. So, I prayed a bit, cried a bit, read my bible and wrote down the many questions I’ve wanted to “officially” ask God for some months now. It was faster than email! Seriously. My journal was filled with paragraph after paragraph of what I felt God was telling me in response to my questions.

After 2 very peaceful hours, I headed back home to feed the baby, grab a sandwich for lunch and put the kids to bed for the afternoon. I was fortunate to have Malcolm home the entire day, so I raced back to St. Dom’s that afternoon for another hour and a half. As I re-entered my crazy world later that day, I reflected on what had happened. For me, my retreat was time away from the distractions of home and little kids, being still for me to communicate with God, and He with me.
