Is evangelism dorky?
When I was in uni the idea of approaching people to talk about Jesus just seemed a bit dorky. My embarasment in doing this provided me with the excuse not to think about it or to actively avoid it! I used the excuse "surely people will be turned off Christianity if we 'witness' to them."
Recently I have been rethinking my attitude!
I know that I have the greatest gift possible in this world, that is the Kingdom of God living within me. I know that God can transform lives and have experienced times when he has used me to impact others through praying with them. The idea that God is at work in the world already and therefore it is up to me to join Him in His work, has also challenged an attitude I wasn't even aware of in my life. The world is not a scary place in which we quickly run out to witness in and them run back inside the church building. God is already out there, working in people's lives in ways that they are not even aware of. My role is to listen to God and join Him when He prompts me. (Mostly this is done through God opening my eyes to see opportunities and taking them)
So when David suggested we take chocolate and fruit around to shops on Easter Sunday the work "dorky" came to mind. I agreed to go because I knew it would stretch me to connect with local people.
It was GREAT! Most of the staff were really appreciative about receiving chocolate. In one place the staff initiated a conversation with me about how Easter was so much more than just a holiday. It was a really easy conversation to have and had a really positive impact on the staff I spoke with.
So I will be really happy to put up my hand to take things around when the next opportuniy comes especially when I remember that God is already at work in people's lives and you never know when He will use me to bring someone closer to Him.
